Harry Douglas Word

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a long and well-lived life, we announce the passing of a husband, father, and Poppy, Harry Douglas Word, of Glasgow, Kentucky on September 29, 2026. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Marjorie Ellen Yates Word; his parents Herbert and Hallie Mae McCue Word, brother, Joe Eagle Word, sisters, Lucy Lee Denny and Mary Grace Word Page. He is survived by his daughter Leigh Ann Word Hogston (David); granddaughters, Ashton Layne Dooley, and Jordyn Ashleigh Dooley Preissman (Trey); a very special niece, Beverly Ann Cary Vance (Donnie); and other living sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Harry's early life was in Temple Hill, Kentucky, where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. He is a 1951 graduate of Glasgow High School, where he played right end on the football team and forward and center for the basketball team. In high school, he met and first dated his wife-to-be, Marjorie, although they wouldn't marry until later.

Harry served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1951-1955, where he received a citation and a commendation as well as eight medals and four battle stars. He was on the Destroyer, USS Laffey DD724 known as "the ship that would not die."

After he left the Navy, Harry married the love of his life, Marjorie, on April 27, 1957. Harry enjoyed a 50- year career as a district manager at Kentucky Central Life Insurance Co., where he was always in the elite 5% of the company in sales. Also winning many awards and honors.

Harry became a Christian in 1963, thus beginning the most important journey of his life, He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church. He and Marjorie worked on many church ministries. Harry was the church treasurer and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Harry stated that his greatest joy was watching many people come to Jesus.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 3rd, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home, with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, and Saturday morning until time for the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be provided at the Glasgow DAV Chapter #20.
