James Otis “Hamburner” Evans, age 77, of Glasgow, began his eternal roam of the heavenly hills and hollows on Saturday, October 3, 2026. He courageously battled Stage 4 Colon Cancer until his body had enough of that nonsense, leaving behind a life that was anything but ordinary.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Judy Ferguson Evans, his son: Trevor Hance Evans of Glasgow, his daughter Kali Sloan Evans (& Eric) Ehrhart of Simpsonville, four grandchildren Elias, Simon, Asher and Pippa Ehrhart, his nephew: Casey Evans and a dear uncle and aunt, Billy Phillips and Betty England.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents James Alexander Evans and Emogene Phillips Evans Kidd, as well as a beloved aunt and uncle, Louis and Dorothy Turner.

Hamburner, the nickname that was given to him as a teen, was stubbornly independent and allowed his beliefs and impulses to drive him instead of the expectations of others. He was hardworking, loyal to family and always believed in doing what was right. The things that drove him often led to stubbornness, resourcefulness and occasionally being misunderstood but never left Jim not thinking for himself. In his mind, there was nothing that black duct tape, hydrogen peroxide or Jesus couldn't fix. He was also a storyteller and loved sharing his tales with any captive audience.

Jim was proud to have been born in San Bernardino, California. Although his childhood took him to around 25 different homes before age 13, some of his fondest memories were of the summers spent with his Grandma in Cumberland County roaming the hills and enjoying the freedom of being a boy in the country. This created a deep love for being outside, fishing, learning about wildlife habits and knowing countless facts about the species and plants he encountered. Those remained among his most cherished memories throughout his life, and he valued sharing those loves with his children and grandchildren.

In 1967, Jim graduated from Glasgow High School. He worked for R.R. Donnely for 39 years, and those years of hard work and sacrifice were not unnoticed by his family. He was a Production Planner by occupation and a planner by nature. Jim always had a backup plan and a backup for the backup. He loved road tripping, watching airplanes and had maps memorized. He could tell you how to get anywhere in the United States, expecting you’d enjoy the scenic route. Jim lived in Glasgow until his final breath.

Hamburner fought and ran towards his own choices for many years, but without shame, he received Jesus as his Savior when he was 27 years old. This experience shaped his faith and gave him a particular compassion for others who were often misunderstood, leading him to seek them out and care for them.
